Assistant Aquatics Manager
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties
performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.
DEFINITION
To assist the Aquatic Manager in administrative and supervisory assignments for effective management of pool operations; assist in budget preparation and planning;
establish safe and high quality programming; promote a positive working environment and maintain a quality lifeguard training program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise direct supervision over part-time and seasonal staff including lifeguards, lifeguard supervisors, water safety and water aerobics instructors.
Receive general direction from Aquatics Manager.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and
termination guidelines. Assign tasks, projects and monitor assigned personnel. Compile and implement part time staff schedules within budget constraints for the safe operation of all programs, activities, aquatic
special events and private rentals. Provide timely and effective staff training sessions to ensure the part time staff is trained to safely manage an emergency according to department policies.
- Supervise instructional swimming and water aerobic programs to ensure safety of the students and instructors by maintaining adequate class sizes and training of
staff. Respond to and meet the needs of parents, students and instructors.
- Compose accurate Community Service Announcements and submit in a timely manner.
- Maintain current staff manuals for lifeguards, instructors and receptionists.
- Assist the Aquatic Manager in the development, organization and implementation of a complete Aquatic program for the community.
- Coordinate summer programs with the School Aquatic Center staff to minimize scheduling conflicts.
- Teach required aquatic classes as needed.
- Compile monthly and annual usage reports, assist with annual budget process.
- Maintain accurate records of part time staff certifications and evaluations, wages, hours worked, and overtime; submit time cards as required.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committee as
assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in pool and water slide operations.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of work assigned.
- Principles and methods of training and instruction for water safety.
- Principles and practices used in interacting with the public.
- Budget operation, planning and record keeping.
- Recreational pool equipment and facilities.
- Principles and practices of scheduling numerous part-time employees.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Principles and practices of working safely.
Skill to:
- Swim.
- Operate modern office equipment.
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to:
- Plan, organize and implement aquatic and special event programs.
- Provide supervision and training to assigned staff.
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with department heads, employees and public.
- Plan, organize and review the work of assigned personnel.
- Work in and around chemicals related to a pool and aquatic environment.
- Swim with profiency at a level to pass lifeguarding test.
- Teach Red Cross CPR, First Aid, lifeguard classes, water aerobic and water safety instructional classes.
- Interact effectively and sensitively with individuals of all ages.
- Deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to
experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Three to four years experience in Aquatics with increasing responsibility in a supervisory position.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Recreation or a related field.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.
- Lifeguard/CPR-PR Instructor.
- Water Safety Instructor.
- Community First Aid and Safety Instructor.
- Lifeguard Today Instructor.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer Instructor.
- Certified Pool Operator, Aquatic Facility Operator or equivalent.
- Blood Borne Pathogens.
- Valid driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:
Working Environment:
- Moderate exposure to extreme heat, noise, working outdoors, chemicals (chlorine), mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards. Availability to work evening
and/or weekends as required and to be on call as necessary.
Physical Activities:
- Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate amount of physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, kneeling,
crouching/stooping/squatting, twisting upper body and climbing. Required to push, pull or lift 40 lbs. of weight. Swim.
