Assistant Technical Director

DEFINITION
To assist the Technical Director in providing technical support in the areas of lighting, sound, audiovisual, video, staging, special effects, rigging and scenery; provide setup and
operate technical equipment; ensure the proper and safe operation of all technical equipment; provide maintenance of light and sound equipment as needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise general direction of part-time stage hands and touring technical crews.
Receive direction from Technical Director.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist the Technical Director with all aspects of event setup, staging requirements, lighting, video taping and sound system coordination and operation.
- Maintain periodic service of lighting fixtures; service and maintain all equipment in Heritage Center and facility as needed.
- Maintain an awareness of the Heritage Center event schedules and deadlines for completion of technical assignments.
- Work with users and touring technical crews in the setup, breakdown, operation, and production of events as directed by the Technical Director.
- Coordinate the use of sound systems and consoles, focus light plots and consoles, setup and staging requirements as required; notify the Technical Director of any equipment
malfunctions, safety violations and improper use of equipment by stage hands or users.
- Purchase technical supplies as directed by Technical Director.
- Serve as stage manager for assigned Heritage Center events.
- Work extended hours including days, nights, holidays and weekends to assist and resolve all technical problems during events.
- Assume technical and supervisory duties in the absence of the Technical Director.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Theater industry safety, rules and regulations.
- Current trends and philosophies of the entertainment business.
- Basic building electrical systems.
- Theatrical electrical practices.
- Lighting and sound system operation and maintenance.
- Special effects equipment, staging, rigging systems, and multipurpose facility equipment.
- Standard Road-House Theater practices.
- Principles and practices of working safely.
Skill to:
- Operate a wide variety of theatrical and specialty electrical equipment and integrate them into existing space while satisfying the customers' requests.
Ability to:
- Understand and meet artists' and performers' abstract ideas and requests.
- Respond to and meet all theatrical and technical requests of artists and performers.
- Work independently with little or no direction.
- Work extended hours in order to prepare for events.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and
training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- One to two years in a theatrical multi-events facility or a professional road house.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in technical theatre.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATE OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:
Working Environment:
- Moderate exposure to undesirable working conditions such as noise, working outdoors, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards. Working extended hours as required by
event.
Physical Activities:
- Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for considerable physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, kneeling,
crouching/stooping/squatting, climbing and lifting an average of 60 lbs. Working overhead.
