Engineering Technician

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.  Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.

DEFINITION

To perform all design and drafting work for a variety of architectural, engineering, and planning projects for the County; perform field inspections, surveying, AutoCad drafting, and engineering calculations and order all drafting supplies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise no supervision.

Receive direction from Assistant Director of Public Works.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Perform surveying and engineering calculations for design and construction of projects.
  2. Provide field inspections to ensure conformity to codes and project specifications.
  3. Perform drafting as it pertains to legal description and land surveying.
  4. Perform a variety of design and drafting assignments using manual and computerized methods; prepare drawings for engineering projects under preliminary design, design and as-built mapping; create and update drawings, maps, graphs, and charts for engineering, architectural, and planning projects for the County.
  5. Maintain accurate files and record drawings for county and other public construction projects, including subdivisions.
  6. Prepare and maintain blueline copies of county maps, record drawings, address books, and building architectural drawings for County use.
  7. Maintain, order, and oversee installation of all signage in county subdivisions.
  8. Work closely with Surveyor to complete surveys as required.
  9. Conduct traffic count studies; place, monitor, and evaluate road counters for traffic studies.
  10. Drive to job sites and survey projects.
  11. Order all drafting supplies for the department.
  12. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  13. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Principles and practices of technical engineering and surveying.
    • Terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical civil engineering report preparation.
    • Signage as applied to roads and subdivisions as per Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
    • Materials, tools, and equipment used in civil engineering.
    • Principles of mathematics as applied to engineering work.
    • Techniques and methods of mapping, surveying, and computer aided drafting.
    • Modern office procedures, methods and equipment.
    • Pertinent County, State and Federal regulations pertaining to building/construction codes.
    • Principles of traffic engineering.
    • Principles and practices of working safely.
    • Safe driving principles and practices.

    Skill to:

    • Operate GPS, electronic surveying equipment, blueprint machine, AutoCad, and map reproduction equipment.
    • Operate modern office equipment.
    • Operate a motor vehicle safely.

    Ability to:

    • Perform technical engineering work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative.
    • Use AutoCad drafting system.
    • Perform skilled mechanical drawing, surveying, and related computations.
    • Maintain, order, and oversee installation of signage.
    • Prepare and maintain technical engineering records.
    • Work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
    • Read and interpret surveys and legal descriptions.
    • Interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
    • Perform accurate mathematical computations.
    • Gather and correlate data from a variety of sources.
    • Conduct traffic and roadway field studies.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • Five to six years of engineering technician and drafting experience.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to two years college or trade apprenticeship and/or specialized training in engineering.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.

    • Valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Considerable exposure to undesirable working conditions such as working outdoors, moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for considerable physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, crouching/stooping/squatting, climbing, and lifting an average of  20 lbs.; drive to different sites and locations.
