Recreation Program Coordinator

DEFINITION
To perform supervisory and administrative work in directing the Wright Recreation Center youth and adult programs, aquatics, and special events; ensure the pool water and chemical
balance meets the state required levels. To assist in budget preparation and planning, and promote a positive work environment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise direct supervision over custodian, lifeguards, volunteers and instructors.
Receive direction from Recreation Superintendent.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop, plan and coordinate a diverse program of athletics, cultural, youth and adult programs.
- Maintain pool water and chemical balance at the required state levels; make minor repairs to pool equipment.
- Assist in the development of annual operations budget by providing the Recreation Superintendent with projections and recommendations for future programming and staffing needs.
- Select, train, motivate and evaluate assigned staff, coordinate staff training, work with employees to correct deficiencies, implement discipline procedures.
- Coordinate facility and equipment use for programs, facility maintenance with School District activities.
- Develop community service announcements for programs and special events.
- Compile monthly and annual usage reports; assist with annual budget process.
- Respond to complaints from the public and staff in a timely manner.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in pool operations.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the areas of work assigned.
- Principles and methods of training and instruction for water safety.
- Principles and practices used in interacting with the public.
- Budget operation, planning and record keeping.
- Planning, organizing and implementing a comprehensive aquatic, adult and youth program, and other special events.
- Recreational pool equipment and facilities.
- Principles and practices of employee scheduling.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Principles and practices of working safely.
Skill to:
- Swim
- Operate modern office equipment.
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to:
- Plan, organize and implement aquatic, adult, youth, and special event programs.
- Provide supervision and training to assigned staff.
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with department heads, employees and public.
- Plan, organize and review the work of assigned personnel.
- Work in and around chemicals related to a pool and aquatic environment.
- Swim with proficiency at a level to pass lifeguarding test.
- Teach Red Cross CPR, First Aid, lifeguard classes, water aerobic and water safety instructional classes.
- Interact effectively and sensitively with individuals of all ages.
- Deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and
training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- One to two years experience in recreation programming and activities.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to two years of college or trade apprenticeship and/or specialized training in recreation programming and activities.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.
- Lifeguard/CPR-PR Instructor.
- Water Safety Instructor.
- Community First Aid and Safety Instructor.
- Lifeguard Today Instructor.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer Instructor.
- Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator.
- Blood Borne Pathogens.
- Valid driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:
Working Environment:
- Considerable exposure to undesirable working conditions or exposure.
Physical Activities:
- Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, twisting upper body, and
climbing. Required to push, pull or lift weights averaging 40 lbs.. Swimming.
