Recreation Program Supervisor

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.  Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.

DEFINITION

To perform administrative and supervisory work, directing all phases of assigned recreation programs and special events. To provide a total recreation program that will serve and meet the needs of the community through both active and passive activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise direct supervision over part time staff, contract instructors and officials.

Receives general direction from Recreation Superintendent.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Plan, organize, schedule and supervise a variety of programs, activities, and specials events; market and schedule the programs or events.
  2. Respond to citizen suggestions and complaints quickly and to provide more successful programs in the future.
  3. Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate numerous part-time and seasonal staff; recruit, train, monitor, schedule and evaluate officials and coaches for sports programs; train, monitor and evaluate fitness, karate, tennis and dance instructors.
  4. Develop, administer, monitor and coordinate the budget for assigned programs and capital budgets.
  5. Compile and submit detailed participation, expenditure and revenue reports for assigned programs.
  6. Coordinate facility and equipment use for programs and assist with setup and tear down for all activities with school district and maintenance staff within department .
  7. Work closely with other Recreation Program Supervisors to assist with their events and to coordinate activities.
  8. Produce flyers for programs and specials events by using all available resources including graphic software programs, digital camera, etc.
  9. Purchase supplies, materials and equipment for all assigned programs and special events.
  10. Officiate, supervise or score keep for all programs when assigned person does not show up.
  11. Work scheduled hours to include holidays, evening and weekends; work on call schedule as required.
  12. Assist the Recreation Superintendent with long range planning and goals for assigned events/programs; assist with development of department policies and procedures.
  13. Attend Board meetings to update members on recreation programs and special events .
  14. Solicit and procure alternative revenues from local businesses for various programs and special events when resources are needed beyond department assets.
  15. Develop community service announcements for programs, meetings and special events.
  16. Update specific programs with league schedules and standing .
  17. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  18. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Principles and practices of planning, developing and managing programs and special events.
    • Principles and practices of supervision .
    • Principles of public speaking.
    • Principles of budget preparation.
    • Principles and practices of working safely.

    Skill to:

    • Operate modern office equipment.
    • Operate a motor vehicle safely.

    Ability to:

    • Supervise large groups of seasonal/temporary workers.
    • Plan, organize, and implement recreation programs.
    • Evaluate recreation programs and make necessary changes for improvements.
    • Speak in front of large groups of people.
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    • Make quick decisions at programs and special events when unforseen circumstances occur.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • Three to four years experience in the field of recreation and special event programming.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Services or related field.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.

    • Valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Moderate exposure to undesirable working conditions including extreme heat, noise, and working outdoors. Availability to work evenings and or weekends as required and to be on call as necessary.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, crawling, twisting upper body, climbing, and lifting an average of 50 lbs.
