Recreation Superintendent
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by
employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.
DEFINITION
To perform supervisory and administrative duties in directing all phases of the recreational facilities and programs including Recreation Center, Wright Recreation Center, Aquatic
Facility, waterslide, and the South Campus Gymnasium. Recreation programs include providing quality youth and adult sports programs, aquatics, special events and activities which meet the needs of the citizens of Campbell County.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise direct supervision over the Maintenance Supervisor, Aquatic Manager, Recreation Program Supervisor (Senior, Adult and Youth), assigned administrative support staff, part
time, seasonal staff and volunteer employees used in operating recreation facilities.
Receive administrative direction from Director of Parks and Recreation.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan and implement the successful management and operation of the Recreation Center, Wright Recreation Center, Aquatic Facility, waterslide, and South Campus gymnasium.
- Work closely with other department division heads, department personnel and outside agencies.
- Plan, coordinate and execute a diverse program of athletics, cultural, and social recreational activities and special events to meet the needs and interest of the public.
- Develop, administer and monitor the recreation division budget and capital improvement projects which includes the Recreation Center, Wright Recreation Center and Aquatic
Facilities; ensure all funds are appropriately spent and stay within budget.
- Select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination
guidelines. Assign tasks, projects and monitor assigned personnel.
- Prepare bid proposals, contracts and agreements for vending services, concessions, t-shirts, awards and major purchases.
- Work with local medias and service groups to promote activities; encourage citizen participation, attendance and interest in department activities; meet with civic
organizations, schools, and individual citizens to promote interest in recreation.
- Solicit and develop alternative revenues when resources are needed.
- Work with the Director to develop and maintain divisional policies and procedures.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of planning, developing and managing recreational programs and facilities.
- Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
- Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Principles and practices of public speaking.
- Principles and practices of working safely.
Skill to:
- Operate modern office equipment.
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to:
- Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.
- Prepare and administer budget.
- Provide administrative and professional leadership and direction for department personnel.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and
training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Five to six years experience in the field of recreation management or related field.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Recreation Administration or a related field.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATE OR REGISTRATION:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:
Working Environment:
- Minimal exposure to undesirable working conditions or exposure.
Physical Activities:
- Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate physical activity including sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling, twisting upper
body, climbing, and lifting an average of 50 lbs.
