Air Traffic Controller
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties
performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.
DEFINITION
To control and direct the flow of air traffic coming into, going out of, and within Class D air space of Gillette-Campbell County airport.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise no supervision.
Receive direction from Chief Air Traffic Controller.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Control and direct the flow of air traffic.
- Monitor local weather conditions.
- Monitor navigational aids.
- Operate tower equipment to include, but not limited to tape recorder, weather equipment, Navigational Aid (NAVAID) monitor, airfield lighting panel, land-line to Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) facilities, radios (4 types), crash phone and light gun.
- Initiate Notices to Airmen (NOTAM's).
- Notify Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighter (ARFF) personnel of an aircraft incident/accident.
- Coordinate with mines for blasting schedules.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in air traffic control.
- Airport Certification Manual; Airport Security Program; Airport Rules and Regulations; FAA advisory circulars; Airport self-inspection program; navigational aids; weather
reports; county disaster plans and policies; military training routes; separation minimums; Federal Aviation Regulations (Parts: 91, 97, 121, & 139); FAA handbook 7110.65; National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) 830;
NOTAM's; aircraft operations and communications; runway conditions reports and runway lighting systems; flight progress strips; Instrument Flight Rules/Visual Flight Rules (IFR/VFR) holding patterns, and visual reporting points.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of work assigned.
- Principles and practices of working safely.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience
and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Three to four years experience as an Air Traffic Controller.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to two years of college or trade apprenticeship and/or specialized training.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATE OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.
- Control Tower Operator License.
- Class II Medical Certificate (annual renewal).
- Weather Observer Certification.
- Certification by FAA Examiner.
