ARFF / Airport Maintenance Technician

DEFINITION

Work with the Airport Operations Supervisor to ensure the airport is operational and safe at all times; serve as first responder to aircraft emergency incidents; provide maintenance of airport structures, grounds, lighting systems and water/sewer system; perform maintenance, repair and operation of heavy and light equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise no supervision.

Receive direction from Airport Operations Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. On call, as necessary, to serve as first responder for aircraft rescue and fire fighting duties; perform emergency operation procedures in accordance with the Air Certification Manual's emergency plan; work closely with local Sheriff and Fire Department to coordinate emergency operations.
  2. Perform work necessary to maintain mechanical, electrical, HVAC, communications and special systems or equipment; check and monitor systems on a regular schedule; perform preventive maintenance as required.
  3. Maintain and operate heavy and light equipment and machinery; perform preventive maintenance as required; inspect, diagnose, locate and repair mechanical problems on a variety of heavy and light equipment and machinery; perform basic welding duties to repair and maintain heavy and light machinery and equipment.
  4. Maintain and repair airport lighting systems; ensure lighting systems are working at all times and if unable to repair system, report problems to Airport Operations Supervisor; on call, as necessary, to repair and maintain airport lighting systems.
  5. Maintain and repair airport water/sewer system; ensure airport water/sewer system is working at all times; perform basic maintenance and repairs on system report problems or concerns to Airport Operations Supervisor; on call, as necessary, to repair and maintain water/sewer system.
  6. Perform snow removal according to Airport Certification Manual's Snow Removal Plan.
  7. Provide lawn and grounds maintenance for both airside and landside to include mowing, sprinkler system maintenance, shrubs and trees maintenance and fertilizing.
  8. Perform fuel farm inspections according to Airport Certification Manual; complete appropriate paperwork; report problems to Airport Operations Supervisor.
  9. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  10. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

     Knowledge of:

    • Airport Certification Manual; Airport Security Program; Airport Rules and Regulations; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circulars; Airport self-inspection program; navigational aids; weather reports; county disaster plans and policies; military training routes; separation minimums; Federal Aviation Regulations (Parts: 91, 97, 121, & 139); FAA handbook 7110.65; National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) 830; Notices to Airmen (NOTAM's); aircraft operations and communications; runway conditions reports and runway lighting systems.
    • Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in building construction, alteration, repair, maintenance, and operation.
    • Basic theory and operation of control systems, mechanical equipment, power equipment, HVAC systems, sprinkler systems, energy management equipment, electrical systems and equipment, communications systems, and diagnostic equipment.
    • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
    • Safe driving, equipment and tool use principles and practices.
    • Public water/sewer systems.
    • Airport lighting systems.
    • Principles and practices of working safely.

    Skill to:

    • Operate manual and power equipment and tools.
    • Operate equipment diagnostic instruments and tools.
    • Operate heavy and light equipment including Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (AARF) Truck.

    Ability to:

    • Repair heavy and light equipment, airport lighting systems, irrigation systems, and water/sewer system.
    • Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely.
    • Work extensive overtime hours on a regular basis.
    • Work in extremes of environmental conditions.
    • Read and understand building mechanical and electrical systems blueprints and diagrams.
    • Read and understand special systems technical programming manuals.
    • Provide emergency repair service to disabled equipment.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • Three to four years as a maintenance technician.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to a high school education including some specialized training and/or college courses in mechanics or aviation mechanics.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATE OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.

    • Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting certification.
    • Basic Emergency Care Course.
    • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Considerable exposure to extreme cold, heat, noise, working outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical, and electrical hazards. Availability for emergency call.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for significant physical activity such as standing, walking, running, kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, crawling, twisting upper body, climbing, and lifting an average of 60 lbs.
