Bus Driver II

DEFINITION

To safely transport children and families to and from school and for other related activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise direct supervision over Bus Driver I.

Receive general supervision from Early Intervention Coordinator.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Safely transport children and families to and from school and for other related activities.
  2. Ensure vehicle is clean and properly inspected including pre and post trip inspections; ensure special equipment is in working order; complete Driver's Vehicle Repair Report as needed; report other concerns appropriately.
  3. Operate vehicle in a safe, efficient, and orderly manner compliant with all driving regulations.
  4. Assist in the safe and orderly loading and unloading of children; be aware of proper child lifting techniques and assist passengers as required; know proper operation of special equipment.
  5. Keep children safe, comfortable and supervised at all times; know children by name and be familiar with their individual needs and/or intervention program.
  6. Follow the proper procedure for emergency evacuation including location and use of emergency equipment.
  7. Train and supervise the Bus Driver I.
  8. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  9. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend training to increase skills as required.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Safe driving principles and practices.
    • Interpersonal skills.
    • Behavior management techniques.
    • Child safety and restraint systems.
    • Basic vehicle preventive maintenance practices.
    • OSHA regulations.
    • Principles and practices of working safely.

    Skill to:

    • Operate a bus safely.
    • Operate special equipment safely.

    Ability to:

    • Communicate with children who have disabilities.
    • Check vehicle for proper fluid levels.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • One to two years bus driving experience.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to a high school education.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATE OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment

    • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Considerable exposure to extreme cold, working outdoors, vibration, confining work space and chemicals such as oil, gas, and coolant.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate amount of physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling, crawling, crouching/stooping/squatting, twisting upper body, climbing, and lifting an average of 60 lbs. Operating specialized transportation equipment.
