Classroom Assistant

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.  Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.

DEFINITION

To assist the preschool classroom in providing effective services within the inclusive classroom.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise no supervision.

Receive general supervision from Early Childhood Instructor and Instructional Assistants.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist the preschool classroom team in taking care of the needs of children in the classroom.
  2. Assist during small group and outside times by playing with the children.
  3. Assist before and after mealtimes by setting up for meals and cleaning up afterwards.
  4. Clean and sanitize mats, bathrooms, toys and other items as assigned.
  5. Follow specific chore list and check off items as they are completed.
  6. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  7. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend training to improve skills as required.

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Child care practices
    • Principles and practices of working safely.

    Ability to:

    • Care for children
    • Clean and sanitize equipment and supplies.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • No prior experience.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to a high school education including general training and experience in child care.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.

    • None.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Exposure to extreme noise, working outdoors, chemicals, and body fluids.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, twisting upper body, lifting an average of 50 lbs.
