Early Intervention Technician

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.  Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job and/or department.

DEFINITION

To provide a comprehensive early intervention program for children ages 2 ½ through five including screening, assessment, intervention and case management service while adhering to Rules and Regulations Governing Services to Children with Disabilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Exercise direct supervision over Instructional Assistants I, II & III.

Receive direction from Early Intervention Classroom Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide screening and assessment of children suspected of being disabled; complete comprehensive assessment reports based on the results of the evaluation.
  2. Develop, implement and monitor specific goals and objectives for children with disabilities in the inclusive classroom; work closely with the trans-disciplinary team.
  3. Implement individual and small group therapies as necessary to meet the individual child's needs while working in conjunction withe trans-disciplinary team.
  4. Plan curriculum for children by providing age appropriate activities and ensuring that IEP goals are being addressed as well.
  5. Co-teach with regular classroom instructor in order to effectively provide early intervention services in an inclusive preschool setting to include parent-teacher conferences, lesson planning, classroom design, kitchen  meetings and oral motor.
  6. Complete daily documentation including case notes, progress reports, IEP updates and classroom observations.
  7. Provide a safe environment for children.
  8. Participate in the selection of assigned staff; supervise and conduct performance appraisals of assigned staff.
  9. Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  10. Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:

    • Normal and atypical child development.
    • Medical conditions and disabilities affecting children and their development.
    • Early childhood teaching techniques and practices.
    • Early behavioral techniques.
    • Wyoming Rules and Regulation governing services to children with disabilities.
    • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
    • Wyoming Rules and Regulation governing services to children with disabilities.
    • Principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
    • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment.
    • Interpersonal skills in order to deal with families and children regarding unique and sensitive issues.
    • CPR, First Aid and other emergency procedures.
    • Principles and practices of working safely.

    Skill to:

    • Operate modern office equipment.

    Ability to:

    • Adapt teaching techniques to each individual child.
    • Work effectively with young children and their families.
    • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
    • Supervise the work of assigned staff.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Relate to adults and children from all levels of the socio-economic structure.
    • Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
    • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

    Experience:

    • One to two years within an early intervention environment or related experience.

    Education/Training:

    • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.

    • CPR/First Aid.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:

    Working Environment:

    • Moderate exposure to extreme cold, heat and noise, working outdoors, chemicals and bodily fluids.  Exposure to typical playground activities.

    Physical Activities:

    • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate activity such as sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, and lifting an average of 50 lbs.
