Technical Director

DEFINITION
To coordinate and oversee technical, staging, lighting and communication aspects; ensure the proper and safe setup, breakdown, and operation of all technical equipment; provide
maintenance of light and sound equipment as needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Exercise direct supervision over Assistant Technical Director, part-time stage hands and functional supervision of touring technical crews.
Receive direction from Theater Manager.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Important and essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Schedule, operation, and administration of all lighting, sound, radio communications systems, audio visual equipment, staging, costuming, and outside technical specialists.
- Provide guidance on technical issues for all users.
- Negotiate and contract technical requirements for events ranging from major national touring productions and national events to small local events; negotiate with and coordinate
all aspects of technical and related needs of artists, artists' representatives, agencies, organizations, and production companies.
- Develop a positive working relationship with users.
- Select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination
guidelines; assign tasks, projects and monitor assigned personnel.
- Administer and develop lighting, sound, radio communications, staging equipment, capital equipment, and miscellaneous technical budgetary requirements.
- Assign, supervise and monitor the use and maintenance of lighting, sound, and radio communication equipment.
- Work extended hours including days, nights, holidays and weekends to assist and resolve all technical problems during events.
- Evaluate need for improvement and repair of equipment; take appropriate action to see that improvements and repairs are made.
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and related activities; attend workshops, conferences, and classes to increase professional knowledge; serve on committees as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Theater industry safety, rules and regulations.
- Current trends and philosophies of the entertainment business.
- Basic building electrical systems.
- Theatrical electrical practices.
- Lighting and sound system operation and maintenance.
- Special effects equipment, staging, rigging systems, and multipurpose facility equipment.
- Standard Road-House Theater practices.
- Theatrical contracts.
- Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
- Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
- Principles and practices of working safely.
Skill to:
- Operate a wide variety of theatrical and specialty electrical equipment and integrate them into existing space while satisfying the customers' requests.
Ability to:
- Understand and meet artists' and performers' abstract ideas and requests.
- Respond to and meet all theatrical and technical requests of artists and performers.
- Work independently with little or no direction.
- Supervise and direct employees and volunteers.
- Work odd hours in order to prepare for events.
- Participate in the negotiation of contracts.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Prepare and administer budget.
- Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and
training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Three to four years in a theatrical multi-events facility or a professional road house to include experience in scheduling, contracting, supervision and budgeting.
Education/Training:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor's or Master's degree in technical theater.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATIONS:
Must be current or obtained within a specified time frame as defined upon employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Essential duties require the following:
Working Environment:
- Significant exposure to undesirable working conditions such as noise, working outdoors, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards. Work extended hours as required by event.
Physical Activities:
- Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for considerable physical activity such as sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, climbing and lifting an average of 60 lbs. Working
overhead.
