Educational programing for children and adults is an important component of our mission at the Rockpile Museum. Two programs that are especially popular for school children are Civil War Day and 1890s School.

Civil War Day

A hands-on history program which allows Campbell County 6th graders an opportunity to gain an appreciation of the human side to “War of the Rebellion,” the most costly war in America’s history. Assisted by volunteers dressed in replica uniforms of the War, students will learn and experience something of the life of the everyday soldiers on both sides of the conflict.

1890s School

This program is designed to allow 3rd and 4th grade students to step back in time 100 years and experience a school day in the 1890s. Pioneer school can be an important lesson for children today. We hope to help you make it as authentic as possible.

Students will discover the differences between today’s school versus what it was like in the 1890s. They will spend time in the schoolhouse located at the Rockpile Museum learning the curriculum of that era.

Students will be dressed in clothes typical of the early 1900s and bring authentic lunches in lard cans/pails. They will sit on benches and use slate boards as they read from McGuffey’s Readers, recite poetry, do penmanship, cipher math problems both orally and written, and participate in a spelling bee. They will be expected to follow the rules and discipline of that era.
