Installing Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a software program used to view eBooks on your computer and transfer them to a device such as the Nook, Sony, or Kobo eReader.To download ADE:
  • Click on the Digital Software tab in the left menu on CCPLS’ Overdrive page (ccpls.lib.overdrive) and selecting Adobe Digital Editions
  • Click Download Adobe Digital Editions
  • You will be redirected to Adobe’s website
  • Click Download now or Install Now
  • Click on the appropriate option for the type of computer you have
  • A pop up will appear; click Run
    • This process may take a few seconds or minutes depending on your internet connection speed
    • The software is now downloading
    • Another pop up message will appear; click on the Run option
    • The next pop-up, make sure to click the check box to accept the license agreement, then click Next
    • On the following screen, click Next
    • On the next pop-up, click Install
    • Once the installation is completed click Close
    • You’ve successfully installed ADE

Check Out An eBook

  • Go to the Digital Library
  • Select Overdrive from the list of Digital Downloads
  • From here you can search and browse the catalog for eBooks
  • Recently added and popular titles are highlighted on the home page; also browse by the categories listed on the left hand side of the page
  • To search, enter a title, author, or keyword in the basic search bar towards the top of the page; if you conduct this kind of search you will retrieve audiobook titles and Kindle book titles as well as ePub titles
  • Click on Advanced Search link to specify the format type you want (in this case Adobe ePub)
  • Helpful hints:
    • Use quotes to search for phrases so your results will be more exact
    • Select “Only Show Titles with Copies Available” from the results screen — that way you can tell whether the library owns the item or if it is merely checked out
    • Click Search; change format to Adobe ePub
    • Ten results are displayed per page; sort by title, creator, release date, most popular, or date added to site
    • Search within a set of results by entering keywords in the search box and clicking Submit
    • Filter for currently available titles by clicking the “Only Show Titles with Copies Available” box; then click Submit
    • Click on the title or the book cover for more details about that item
    • If there are no copies available you’ll see a 0; choose Place a Hold to add your name to the waiting list
  • If the book is available click Add to cart next to Adobe ePub; once you add something to your cart, you can continue browsing or proceed to checkout
  • Click Proceed to Checkout
  • If you aren’t logged in you will be prompted to enter your library card number
  • Enter the card number from the pack of your card and your PIN
  • Click Sign In
  • Click Confirm Check Out
  • Click Download
If this is your first download, you will have to authorize your computer in ADE. If you’ve already gone through that process, click Open to open the file in ADE and skip step two.

Authorize Adobe Digital Editions

  • Leave the eBook Vendor as Adobe ID
  • If you do not already have and Adobe ID, click Create and Adobe ID link; you will then be directed to the Adobe.com web site
  • Fill in each field and click Create (write down your email and password); the welcome screen will appear when you’ve completed registration, you can now close your web browser
  • Return to the Authorization screen in ADE
  • Enter your Adobe ID and Password
  • Click Authorize

Transfer eBook to a Device

  • The book you checked out will now begin to download into Adobe Digital Editions
  • ADE automatically opens the eBook in the Reading View, you can read the book on your computer if you want
  • To transfer the title to your Nook, select Library View in the upper left hand corner of the screen
  • Library View displays icons for each title you have in the highlighted folder under Bookshelves
  • The lending period is displayed across the top right hand corner of the book
  • Connect your Nook to your computer using the USB cord, it will appear under Devices
  • While in Library View, locate the icon for the eBook you wish to transfer
  • Click and drag this icon to the left side of the screen and drop it over the name of your device
  • When you see the green + sign release the mouse
  • If this is your first time connecting your Nook to ADE it will automatically be authorized with the same ADE account information during this step

Early Return

In ADE, right-click on the book cover for item options; the Item information will be displayed. Select Return Borrowed Item (if the book has passed its due date, the return option will not be available; this is when you would use the Remove from Library option).

Safely Disconnect Nook from Computer

  • In the computer toolbar there will be a picture of a USB cord with a small green check
  • Click Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media
  • Click Eject Nook
  • Once you see the Safe to Remove Hardware message you may unplug your device from the computer
