The Presidency of Harry S. Truman

Tuesday, February 18, 2020

In honor of Presidents Day, Campbell County Public Library is pleased to welcome Lucas Fralick, Gillette native and University of Wyoming master’s candidate studying history, to speak about the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953, Harry S. Truman. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Library and the Campbell County League of Women Voters.

Few presidents have captured the public imagination like Harry S. Truman. To many Americans, Truman represented the “common man,” a person they could relate to. Coming to office after the tragedy of Franklin Roosevelt’s death in 1945, Truman oversaw the end of World War II and made decisions that influenced American policy for decades.

Fralick’s presentation will examine Truman and his presidency, answering questions like: Who was Harry Truman? What took a farmer from Independence, MO, to the White House? What can his presidency teach us about our own times?

Fralick’s thesis research is on the Point IV Program and its role in the Truman administration. He has been researching and writing about the Truman administration for the past six years and logged over 60 hours at the Truman Library in Independence, MO. His research interests focus primarily on United States politics and policy during the Cold War.
