Too Short to Bind: Dry Farming at Rawhide Butte, 1910-1923

Friday, June 14, 2019

TOO SHORT TO BIND: DRY FARMING AT RAWHIDE BUTTE, 1910-1923 Friday, June 14, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Come and hear the story of some of the “dry farmers” who came to Gillette from the Midwest to homestead “Free Government Land” during the 1910's. It is the story of thirty-four people who came from Iowa to settle near Gillette. You will learn who they were and where they came from, their experiences here, and where they went in the great scattering after the crops failed (again) in 1919. It is also the overlapping of chapters in many histories – the family histories of the people who lived through those years, the history of the early years of Gillette, and one lesser-known chapter in the history of the American West. Note: A separate program on “Finding the Story” will be presented on Saturday, June 15. Attendees will find either (or both) interested as there is minimal duplication in the two programs.
